“I think these works place Steciw in a different category than the countless digital image appropriators and manipulators at work today; I think she is coming from a different conceptual place. She’s way out on the edge where the photographs have become cold objects and the digital transformations have become a dance recognizable to the computer savvy. She’s playing with both virtual and physical space, with texture and surface, the stock photographs and the other accoutrements abstracted and yet still somewhat representative of their original selves. It’s a new aesthetic, with new associations, firmly rooted in our ever evolving Internet reality.”

Art Collector Herbert Vogel Dies

Herbert Vogel, who, along with his wife Dorothy, amassed one of the most important collections of Minimalist art worldwide, died on Sunday at the age of 89.

A postal worker and a librarian, the couple used their modest salaries to collect works by artists including Sol LeWitt, Donald Judd, and Robert Mangold.

A few years ago, the Vogels donated their entire collection to the National Gallery in Washington D.C. The Gallery is exhibiting about 1,000 of the donated works; the other pieces have been distributed in 50-item lots to one museum in each state, a project called Vogel 50x50.

Awe. Someone re-blogged this with the comment that this is amazing. Which got me thinking….It’s actually not.

There is no end to rejection in art (or I suppose in life), no matter how “successful” a person might seem. I had a heck of a last year. Lost of prizes, lots of shows. I’m sure from the outside it might look like I’m on top of the world…. and to some degree I am. Hard work paying off feels great. But the part I don’t advertise as much is that there is still, and I am certain always will be, plenty of getting rejected.

They way I see if you don’t get rejected every now then you are really doing something wrong. Your art must be boring. Or you have become complacent and aren’t trying to push things.

I figure the best goal is to keep one upping your rejection. Try to get rejected from increasingly impressive things, grants, publications, institutions, people, etc.

Little Shining Man is a sculpture that has the potential for flight.
The design of the structure is based around the tetra kites of Alexander Graham Bell, multiplied out into colliding cubes that take their form from the cubic formations of the mineral Pyrite. A double wing module has been duplicated and arranged into a tight cellular structural arrangement that appears as a heavy, un-flyable mass. Utilising lightweight materials and the symmetry of the module and composition, it is able to fly freely and steadily.
The kite flown in the images is one section of an arrangement of three, that come together to create the final piece of sculpture that is taken own from display once a year to be flown in St. Aubin’s Bay.
There were several challenges in realising Little Shining Man. The structure had to be as strong and light as possible in order to fly, but had to return to earth with minimal damage so it could be installed as a piece of sculpture. Carbon fibre rod and Cuben fibre, a hand made composite fabric used primarily in racing yacht sails, achieved the perfect combination of strength and weight. The visual impact of the fabric produces an ethereal sense of depth and refraction that gives the heavy mass the lightest touch.
